GERD Generates 6,800 Megawatts of Electricity in Nine Months
Ethiopian authorities have announced that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has generated 6,800 megawatts of electricity over the past nine months. Currently, five turbines are producing 400 megawatts each, contributing significantly to the country's energy production. Upon the completion of all eleven turbines, Ethiopia’s total electricity production is expected to increase by 83%, with the GERD projected to generate a total of 5,150 megawatts when fully operational.
Ethiopian Airlines Suspends Flights to Tel Aviv Amid Regional Tensions
Ethiopian Airlines has temporarily suspended its regular flights between Addis Ababa and Tel Aviv due to operational considerations amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The airline announced on June 16 that the suspension would remain in effect until June 22. Ethiopian Airlines previously suspended flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut during the Lebanon-Israel conflict in 2022.
Tigray IRA President Urges Accountability for Genocide Perpetrators
Gen Tadesse Worede, President of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (IRA), has called on the Tigray Genocide Commission to collaborate with international organizations to hold those responsible for the genocide in Tigray during the 2020-2022 war accountable. He emphasized the importance of documenting and preserving evidence of the atrocities to prevent their recurrence and ensure justice. The president stressed that acknowledgment of the genocide is vital for achieving accountability.
Ethiopia Proposes Revised Expatriate Employment Bill
The Ethiopian government has presented a revised expatriate employment bill to the Federal Parliament, which includes new requirements for private employment agencies. The bill mandates that agencies must have a capital of up to 20 million birr to obtain a license, and they are required to deposit a guarantee between 50,000 to 250,000 USD with the Ministry of Works and Skills. The revised bill also transfers the responsibility of employee recruitment to the ministry based on its needs. Private employment agencies have raised concerns, claiming that these changes may not be effective. So far, 344,790 Ethiopian workers have been sent abroad in the current fiscal year, mainly to the Middle East.

Eritrea’s Minister of Information, Yemane Gebremesqel, has criticized officials from Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party and their supporters for their views on Eritrea’s maritime assets. Yemane accused them of holding positions that lack logic, common sense, and adherence to international law and diplomatic norms. He reiterated Eritrea’s stance on not partially auctioning its sovereign maritime assets and accused Ethiopia of threatening to secure access to the sea, either through diplomatic means or force.
