Rights Groups Raise Concerns Over Arbitrary Detentions of Tigrayans
Human Rights First and the opposition Salsawi Weyane Tigray party have reported that several ethnic Tigrayans have been arbitrarily detained in Addis Ababa in recent days. The rights groups have urged the Ethiopian police to either release the detainees or formally charge them with a crime. The Salsawi Weyane Tigray party has demanded an investigation into the police officers involved and accountability for these actions. The police have yet to provide an explanation for the detentions.
National Bank of Ethiopia Ends Mandatory Treasury Bond Purchases
The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has ended the requirement for commercial banks to purchase Treasury Bonds as part of their monthly loan disbursements. The NBE cited alternative external financing mechanisms and improved domestic revenue collection as the reasons behind the decision. Despite this change, the NBE maintained the policy rate at 15% and extended the 18% cap on credit growth until September 2025 in an effort to curb inflation, which stood at 14.4% in May 2025.
UN OCHA Condemns Killing of Humanitarian Worker in Amhara
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has condemned the killing of Mahlet Sitotaw Abera, a humanitarian worker for the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara (ORDA), during crossfire between government forces and non-state armed groups in Angot district, North Wollo zone. OCHA has called on all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers and civilians and to adhere to international humanitarian norms.
Amnesty International Urges Immediate Release of Dr. Daniel Fentaneh
Amnesty International has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Daniel Fentaneh, a lecturer and final-year resident in Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Bahir Dar University. Dr. Daniel was arbitrarily arrested on June 25 by the Amhara regional police, allegedly for mobilizing health professionals for a strike that led to fatalities. Amnesty condemned the arrest as part of a worrying pattern of disregarding the rule of law by Ethiopian authorities, with concerns raised about the political motives behind such prosecutions.
